Within a 30-minute drive from Samara you can find six distinct beaches that offer a variety of conditions and challenges for surfers. Aside from Samara and Carrillo, which are partially protected by reefs across their bay entrances, these beaches are completely open to the Pacific Ocean and the full strength of the swell and currents. Novice surfers and swimmers should exercise caution when big swells roll in to these beaches. More>

By Hayleen Noguera

Casona de Santa Rosa
Many young people in Nosara and surrounding neighborhoods have found a new recreational activity. Generally speaking the main sport in the area is soccer, or “el futbol”, but recreational bicycling has come to motivate many to participate as much in this town as in different parts in the province. By Spacialle Novak

This month’s victim: Cynthia Urbina, part of the dynamic kitchen staff at the Gilded Iguana. Matt, Joellen and Dino enjoy introducing new ingredients to the kitchen, encouraging staff to be creative with new flavors while learning new dishes. Every staff member has passion for food and experience in the kitchen, but not one person is “the chef.” The team works together, several food specialists working like cogs in a well-oiled machine, even on a 200-plus Tuesday night.

The Gilded Iguana’s kitchen philosophy intends to develop flexible skills and drive within their staff, assisting them gain practical experience and skills on the job while training each how to head their own kitchen someday. More >

Letter to the Editor – A War Caused by the Water
by Evangelina Quesada Corrales

I could have never imagined that it would occur in my peaceful country, but today we are experiencing a war caused by the water thanks to the current management of the ASADA at Nosara’s American Project. This association is run by foreigners who do not respect Costa Rican Laws and, on the contrary, they show great skepticism and disdain towards the government and the country in which they so comfortably reside.

Shop Smart
By emiliana Garcia
‘Casado’, ‘Gallo Pinto’, ‘Sopa Negra’…what do these three dishes have in common? Yep, you guessed it! Beans.

Whether black, red, or white; thick, thin or fresh; dried, refried, or ground; with rice or with peppers; there are many ways for beans to be prepared and there’s no doubt that they form the basic part of the Costa Rican diet. However, have you ever asked yourself how industrial producers always keep beans so shinny and insect free? More >

Nicoya Lost Two Board Members in the Last Elections
By Oliver Pérez
In the February 7th national elections, 32 candidates for landowner board members from 7 political parties challenged the five seats the Nicoya Municipality will have, and the same number of substitutes. The reduction from seven to five councilors should be the last information supplied by the National Institute of Statistics and Census, which reported that this canton accounts for only 1% of the country’s population; only Liberia will have seven since it has 2% of the national population. Kitson Library Annual Benefit
Giving Back in Paradise
By Becca Williams

Theatre in Nosara is a far cry from Broadway but our local version packs more “heart” than any professional stage production. This year’s annual benefit to support Nosara’s library is a staged reading of Neil Simon’s comic Broadway hit, The Sunshine Boys. More >

Wingnuts Canopy Tour –
Keeping It All In The Family, And Making You Feel Like Part of it
By ASHLEY STEYAERT
Taking a break from her kitchen, Wingnuts matron and administrator Deborah steps outside her home and introduces our guides for the day, Manu and Freddy; Manu is one of her three sons, all of whom work for the family business, and Freddy is a Hojancha native who Deborah affectionately refers to as “[her] other son”. Over 13 years ago these two men personally built the 10 platforms and hung the 11 cables that constitute the Wingnuts Canopy Tour on the family property just outside downtown Sámara, and they have been guiding tours together here ever since. “Bumps Spreading in Nosara like Measles”
By Steve Coan
OPINION – Every year, more and more “speed bumps” are constructed around the Nosara area and are spreading like the Measles. It was my first impression that these were “illegal” and those who put them up were liable for any damages that might incur as a result of their construction. However, this must not be the case as they continue to spring up like weeds during the wet season. More >

During this week she will volunteer what precious little time she has out of the water (she’ll be swimming approximately 8 hours and 20 km a day, in to two 4-hour sections, eating lunch on her support boat) giving workshops with the objective of “foster[ing] the view that the sea is not to be feared, polluted and exploited, but defended, protected and celebrated”.
